Microsoft To Retire SMS TEXT and Voice Authentication for MFA

Action Required: Microsoft is retiring SMS text and phone call for MFA, 2-Factor authentication

WHAT?
Microsoft is retiring SMS (text) messaging and phone calls as verification choices for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Moving forward, secure sign-ins will require a security key or modern authenticator app installed on a mobile device or internet browser extension.

WHEN?
September 2026 - If you still rely on text or phone call as your preferred methods, you will be prompted to setup an authenticator app. If you already have an authentication app setup on your MySUNYOrange account, that app will become your default method.  This means that after you enter your username and password, you will be prompted to use your already setup authentication app instead of text or phone call.

Feb 1, 2027 - SMS Text and VOICE calls will no longer work.  Microsoft will be disabling the use of these methods.  If you do not have an authentication app setup, you will be required to do so before gaining access to MySUNYOrange.

WHY?
Text and voice calls are vulnerable to SIM swapping, intercept attacks, and network outages. Using an authenticator app provides stronger protection against unauthorized access and keeps your account significantly more secure.

What should you do right now?
If you do not use an authentication app for MySUNYOrange, please setup and start using it as your default authentication method to avoid any disruption to your account access.

  • Step 1: Browse to the View and Update your Authentication Methods (MFA) link
  • Step 2: Select Add sign-in method, choose Authenticator app, and follow the on-screen prompts to setup the preferred supported tool, Microsoft Authenticator APP, on your mobile device. (See NOTE Below for other supported options)

  • Step 3: Set Microsoft Authenticator as your primary sign-in method.

NOTE:
The following KB (Knowledge Base) articles are available for detailed instructions on setting up the Microsoft Authenticator APP, browser authenticator extension, or Windows computer authenticator alternative.
