Windows 11 Employee User Self Update

Body

Before you begin

  • Plug in your college owned laptop. Ensure it’s on main power (or at least 50 % battery) throughout the download and installation.

  • Save your work & back up files. Close any open applications. We recommend storing important documents in your OneDrive “Documents” folder to ensure they’re backed up ahead of the upgrade.

  1. Open Windows Update

    1. Click Start → Settings (⚙️) → Update and Security →  Windows Update.

    2. Click Check for updates.

  2. Download the Windows 11 feature update

    • When you see “Feature update to Windows 11, version 23H2,” click Download and install.

    • Tip: While it downloads (≈ 1 hour 10 minutes on a Wi‑Fi connection), you can continue working in Windows 10.

    • Note: Download time may vary with network traffic.

  3. Install the update

    • Once the download completes, you’ll receive a notification: “Restart required to finish installing Windows 11.”

    • Click Restart now or schedule a convenient restart time.

      • If you find the update does not apply when you Restart now, or when your scheduled restart occurs,
please use the Start Menu, Power, Update and Restart

    • Installation time: ≈ 10 - 15 minutes depending on your computer. Your PC will reboot automatically and show progress.

  4. First sign‑in & “Getting things ready…”

    • After installation, sign in as usual.

    • You’ll see the “Hi … Getting things ready…” setup screens. This only happens once and may take a few minutes.

  5. Confirm you’re on Windows 11

    • After OOBE (out-of-box-experience) finishes, you’ll arrive at the Windows 11 desktop.

    • Go to Settings → System → About to verify Edition and Version (should read 23H2).

  6. Check your files & settings

    • Ensure your desktop, files, and OneDrive folders are intact.

    • Pin any frequently used apps to the new Start menu or Taskbar as desired.

    • Run Windows Update again (Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates) to install any latest patches.

  7. Provide feedback

    • If anything behaves differently — longer download/install times, unexpected errors, missing update, etc. — please submit an IT ticket and be sure to include:

      • Your device's OCCC tag number

      • A description of what happened

      • Screenshots or error messages, if available

Additional reminders

  • During download/install, your PC may feel slower or restart multiple times; this is normal.

  • If the Windows 11 update doesn’t appear, run Check for updates again or open an IT ticket for assistance.

  • Request eligibility.  If the update doesn't show as available to you, please submit an IT ticket and include your device’s OCCC tag number so we can make sure your computer is made eligible for the upgrade.

  • Enjoy your Windows 11 experience — and thank you for helping us improve the process!
