Setting up MFA in an Internet Browser with TOTP authentication extension

Authenticator is a TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) web browser extension that can be used to generate the 6-digit codes to complete your 2 factor authentication (MFA). It can be a solution for individuals who don't currently have a cellphone or mobile device to use for MFA.  You can install the extension to common web browser(s) and configure the extension to use for your mySUNYOrange account.

STEP 1: Install the Authenticator extension to your desired browser

Launch Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, and Browse to Authenticator https://authenticator.cc/ and select the "Add to ---(BROWSER)---" from the drop down menu.

Note to Chrome users:

After the extension installation is complete,
you may get a "Chrome Issues" pop up window -
ignore this and close the tab. Then in Chrome, you
will need to go to the upper right corner of your browser,
click on the Extension button (puzzle piece icon) and
then click on the pushpin icon next to "Authenticator"
to add the extension to your browser toolbar.

STEP 2: Configure the Authenticator extension

Open a new browser tab and go to your currently setup MFA settings https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo. You may need to login AND complete the MFA verification at this point.

Click Add sign-in method, select Authenticator app from the drop-down and click Add.

From the window that appears, click the "I want to use a different authenticator app" link. Click Next.

The Scan the QR code window will appear. DO NOT CLICK NEXT YET!  Keep this window open and proceed to the next step.

You will see a window appear with a QR code. Leave this window open and proceed to the next step.

Click the Authenticator button (newly installed on your browser) on the top toolbar, and then click the scan button (which is the square with a horizontal line through it).

Click Allow if your browser gives you a pop-up asking if you want to give Authenticator permission to access data for all websites. 

Click and and HOLD drag your cursor over the QR code - to make a "frame" around it just like you were capturing a screenshot.
You should get a message that your account was added. Click OK

NOTE:  If you get an error or are NOT able to use the SCAN QR Button,
Use the "Can't scan image" option below the QR Code and add the account information manually into the Authentication app

After you have scanned the code OR completed the setup manually.  Click Next on the Scan the QR code screen 
You will be prompted to confirm the 6-digit code that your Authenticator extension generates.  It's like getting a text message to your browser!

Click Next on the Scan the QR code screen. You will be prompted to confirm the 6-digit code that your Authenticator extension generates.

To generate the code, click the Authenticator button again from the toolbar. You should see a 6-digit code listed.
Click on the number to copy it. THEN paste the code in to the Enter code box of the Authenticator app setup window. Click Next to complete the configuration. account. 

 

 

STEP 3: Using the Authenticator extension

To use the Authenticator extension, sign-in to the MySUNYOrange portal as you normally would.   When should prompted to Enter the code from your Authenticator App.


 

Click the Authenticator extension button from your Browser toolbar.  Click on the 6-digit number to copy it then paste the code into the code box and click Verify

The Authenticator app in your browser will continuously generate new valid codes as needed.
